Reyna Tropical — the project of guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer Fabi Reyna — released her debut album Malegría via Psychic Hotline earlier this year. A “Vitamin D-drenched cumbia sparkler” (NYLON), the album has garnered praise from the likes of The New York Times, Billboard, Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, and more. Sylvan Esso’s edit of album standout “Cartagena,” which the duo surprised Reyna with during a DJ set at SXSW earlier this year is out now.
Reyna says, “I was sipping on my mezcal on a sunny Austin day in March watching Sylvan Esso making the crowd wild with the sickest DJ set when suddenly I heard a guitar that sounded like mine and realized I was hearing this underworld version of ‘Cartagena.’ Nick is one of the most amazing producers I know so hearing him turn one of my favorite songs on Malegría into a thicc sexy club hit was the best surprise of 2024.”
