April 9, 2024 - By Psychic Hotline

Songs Of by Indiana-based multi-disciplinary artist Nathaniel Russell arrives May 24 via Psychic Hotline. Last month’s album announcement arrived with a lyric video for Songs Of’s opening song “Wonderful To Be In Love,” and today Russell is sharing its following track on the record, “Silver.”

““Silver” is my favorite song that I’ve sung for the longest time,” says Russell, “It’s become a search for some kind of meaning and connection in life on earth reduced to as few words as possible and reminds me that a feeling can sometimes appear as a color. I love this recording so much. The rhythm section of Nick Sanborn and Joe Westerlund articulate the joy of the quest and Amelia’s layered vocals light the path. I still sing this song almost every day since we recorded it.”

Songs Of was recorded at Betty’s, the wooded studio haven of Sylvan Esso, where recent releases from Caroline Rose, Wednesday, The Mountain Goats, Flock of Dimes, Indigo de Souza, and many more have been born. It was produced by Amelia Meath (also of The A’s) and engineered by Alli Rogers, and features additional vocals from both, percussion from Joe Westerlund (Megafaun, Califone), saxophone and clarinet by Matt Douglas (the Mountain Goats), with bass guitar and drum programming by Nick Sanborn (Sylvan Esso, Made of Oak).

Russell makes drawings, paintings, prints, murals, objects, music and videos that are exhibited  internationally in galleries, DIY spaces, and living rooms, often with friends and fellow artists. Over the past however-many years his work has appeared on album covers by Vetiver, Neil Halstead, Mountain Man, and Tommy Guerrero among others. Drawings have been seen in The New York Times, Apartamento, The Baffler and many other publications and books. A lifelong skateboarder, his graphics are on countless decks, accessories and clothing. All this to say that Russell makes a lot of different kinds of work that may be familiar to you already and continues to make more every day.

You can order Songs Of now on LP (each jacket is hand-numbered and stamped by Russell), cassette, and digital via Psychic Hotline’s store or your favorite independent record shop.
