GRRL x Made of Oak Release Debut Single “Inertia”
July 6, 2022 - By Psychic Hotline
Today, two mainstays of North Carolina’s eclectic dance scene have come together to introduce the beginning of something exhilarating, unexpected and entirely new. For the better part of the past decade, Durham-based DJ, producer and NTS-affiliate James Mapley–Brittle (GRRL) and Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn (Made of Oak) have found themselves spinning their own singular, dissimilar strains of electronic music at many of the same parties, without realizing the specific obsessions they shared. A conversation about peak-hour club music led to visions of a collaboration, and the mission to create a massive track that was layered and multi-textured enough to fit into each of their sets. But as they convened at Betty’s studio in Chapel Hill, a creative chemistry emerged, and the result was much bigger.
Featuring artwork and visuals created, produced and directed by Aaron Anderson and Eric Timothy Carlson (Bon Iver, Leon Vynehall), GRRL x Made of Oak’s debut single, “Inertia,” is a glitchy jolt of energy, delivering cerebral, trance-inducing techno and preview of more to come.
GRRL x Made of Oak will present their first official performances at Brooklyn’s Pioneer Works on July 27th, and Los Angeles’ Gold Diggers on August 4th. Announced today, both events are free and will also include special DJ sets from Sylvan Esso.
